ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES + MATERIAL.

This project introduces students to design an Introspective Architectural Folly that generates spatial experience derived from reflective and rethinking dispositions about the self for users, with a maximum volume of 125m3. It also allows us to explore the possible spatial qualities through an understanding of timber construction and joinery. In a group of 2, we were also tasked to further develop our folly based on the architectural principles gathered from Project 1 through the use of architectonics.

REQUIREMENTS. 1 x 1:50 model, full set of architectural drawings, 3 x A1 presentation boards, recorded presentation

DURATION. 12 April 2021 (Week 3) - 06 May 2021 (Week 6)

An introspective FOLLY OF SELF REFLECTION.

Given the COVID-19 situation, it has caused many complications including existential queries that have been emerging. For our final project, in a group of 2, we were tasked to design an introspective folly that offers spatial qualities to contemplate and reflect on oneself, as well as connecting with nature.

REFLECTION.

We were required to design a timber folly based on the selected architectural principles from Project 1. From this assignment, I was able to reflect on the importance of developing spatial qualities and learned how they can affect the structure. It involved a long and challenging process of trial & error, ideation, and discussion with my group member, however, the whole process was a very enjoyable and interesting discovery as it was my first time understanding the design process in relation to the design development with the buildability and construction details. In addition, understanding a user and its journey also added more challenges to the design's decision-making.

As we were a group of 2, we shared the workload equally. The opinions that we shared were mainly similar so we had a smooth ideation process. It was a very delightful experience as we did not have any disputes or disagreements at all. Even though our submission was a little rushed, we managed to complete the project successfully. However, I think that I personally could have done better in this project. Overall, I am very grateful for my other member who is very initiative and willing to lead the project. This assignment has definitely allowed me to generate a better understanding of timber construction, spatial qualities, and how it can affect a structure.
