TROPICAL SOLITARY HAVEN.

This project tasked us to design a solitary haven for users to spend their solitary time and strengthen their relationship with the surrounding nature that they might have forgotten due to spending long lockdowns at home. It also introduces us to analyzing the site context and generating design strategies for the building. It allows us to demonstrate our 3 design intentions through the application of architectural principles, materiality, and timber constructability in designing a solitary haven that is able to create a memorable spatial experience for the users.

REQUIREMENTS. 1 x 1:100 model, full set of orthographic drawings, 3 x A1 presentation boards, recorded presentation, 3 x workshop submissions

DURATION. 06 May 2021 (Week 6) - 28 June 2021 (Week 14)

Reconnecting our relationship with nature .

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, countries have started lock-downs where students transitioned to study-from-home. Thus, it is vital to design a quarantine space for people to prevent the spreading of the virus whilst ensuring a good lifestyle throughout quarantine. For our final project, we were tasked to design a solitary haven at Subang Ria Recreational Park. It is important to make the architecture unique to its landscape and build a relationship between my design and the site context.

REFLECTION.

For our final project, we were assigned to a solitary haven accommodating 2 users that corresponds to the immediate site context and generated a design narrative with 3 design intentions. The process of understanding the user and site context defined infinite complications relating to the site context and construction details were hard to depict but it was worthwhile. It is vital to create unique architecture which is able to build a relationship between design and the site context.

From this assignment, I was able to reflect on the importance of developing a design by analyzing the site context in order to generate design strategies. The design process involved a long and tiring process of trial & error and ideation, however, the analysis conducted was a very interesting discovery as it was my first time designing a solitary haven that corresponds to the immediate site context. It was quite pressuring to complete the project as there were several submissions in the final week. In addition, the workshops with the AD3, AD4, and AD5 seniors were very helpful as they made sure we understood everything and even offered to experience with us.

Lastly, I would like to thank my tutor, Mr. Nik Syazwan for guiding me through this journey as it did ease me from confusion at certain points of this project and has taught me many new things. He was always ready to help me whenever I was lost and pointed out places for improvement. This module was really enjoyable for me as I was able to express my design and further improve myself.
