MEMORY REPOSITORY.

After conducting site analysis in Project 2, this project tasked us to design a memory repository for users in Machap Baru to emphasize a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences, and programmatic requirements with an approximate internal space of 450sqm. Users should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express the spirit of the place (genius loci) through the application of architectural principles, materiality, sustainability, and constructability in designing a memory repository that is able to create a wonderful spatial experience for the users.

REQUIREMENTS. 23 - 30 x A3 presentation boards, 5 x A1 presentation boards, recorded presentation, 4 x workshop submissions

DURATION. 21 October 2021 (Week 9) - 24 November 2021 (Week 14)

Reconnecting
our relationship
with MACHAP
BARU
.

Development is advancing rapidly, causing youngsters to leave Machap new village into the city to make a living, causing a decrease in population. We are to bring the forgotten past to life, and conserve the the village & memories of people in Machap which started to fade through time. It acts as a DOORWAY TO LOST MEMORIES that links the past to the present which also serves the community as a learning tool about culture and history over time. By incorporating intangible elements of multisensorial experiences in Machap, the repository evokes a journey of memories for users. Younger generation can seize this opportunity to enhance their relationship with the traditional past while the older generation is able to reminisce and take a trip down memory lane.

REFLECTION.

For our final project, we were assigned to design a memory repository that provides a physical point of reference with significance that keeps the essence of Machap Baru alive. To provide accommodation and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.

From this assignment, I was able to reflect on the importance of developing a design by analyzing the site context in order to generate design strategies. The design process involved a long and tiring process of trial & error and ideation, however, the analysis conducted was a very interesting discovery as it was my first time producing a small-scale community building within an open suburban context, following site analysis, user requirements, sustainability, buildability, and spatial poetics. It was quite pressuring to complete the project as there were several submissions in the final week. I think that if I had more time, I could have produced a better outcome. In addition, the workshops provided were very helpful as they allowed us to further understand certain aspects of the project. I have also been able to learn the basics of new software such as Revit, Lumion, and Photoshop to help in this project.

Lastly, I would like to thank my tutor, Mr. Chern Li for guiding me through this journey as it did ease me from confusion at certain points of this project and has taught me many new things. He was always ready to help me whenever I was lost and pointed out places for improvement. This module was really enjoyable for me as I was able to express my design and further improve myself.
